Desiree looked at the four pizza boxes in front of her and sighed. She could not remember the last time she had seen this much pizza. Of course that was what happened when you let a tipsy Rochelle make the orders. “Pepperoni and chili, barbequed chicken, Hawaiian and meat deluxe,” she thought as she carried the boxes to the living room. “It’s like a freaking Italian fest in this house.” She set the boxes on the table.

“Okay, pizza’s here,” she announced.

“And I have the beer. We good,” Rochelle said lifting a six pack.

“Okay, you know what, you are good with Kool-Aid,” Cynthia said with a smile. And she was right. Judging by the way Rochelle was going, she was probably going to have a bad hangover the next day. Even though Rochelle usually presented herself as a person with high alcohol tolerance, Cynthia and Desiree knew better. Today, they had decided to have a night in and to do that they made sure they invited Desiree’s man, Taylor, and Tony, Rochelle’s mysterious guy. For a long time Rochelle had been the kind of girl who kept a guy just long enough for him to begin to develop feelings before she kicked him to the curb. Tony was the first guy she had stuck with for more than four months – a personal best for her and her sister thought it was wise for them to meet this baffling man. Of course there was no telling if Rochelle would ever honor her word and bring him over but Desiree knew exactly how to twist her arm and because of that, her sister was having a hard time keeping a straight face.

When Desiree finally sat down next to Taylor, she smiled at him.

“Are you sure she is okay?” he whispered as he looked at Rochelle. Desiree smiled.

“She is more than okay. She is in love and she doesn’t want to admit it,” she murmured squeezing his hand.

“Why? Love is such a beautiful thing,” Taylor said kissing Desiree’s cheek.

“Rochelle thinks love makes you weak and she doesn’t want to admit that she has really fallen hard for Tony,” she whispered as she took a pizza slice from the box. “Hey guys, you better have your pizza before it gets cold,” she announced as she bit into her Hawaiian slice.

‘Did you clean out the damn Pizza Hut?” Cynthia asked looking at the boxes. “You’ve got every single flavor known to man,” she said as she looked at Rochelle.

“I was hungry and everyone likes something different. You’re welcome,” Rochelle said sarcastically as she looked at Cynthia. She turned her attention to Tony. She could see the way her sister and cousin looked at her and she could tell that they knew. Tony’s charming brown eyes and kind heart had gotten to her. She looked over at Desiree and smiled before moving over next to her. “I need to talk to you,” she said.

“What? Now?” Desiree asked looking at her. Rochelle nodded and yanked her arm as she stood up. Desiree followed her down the hall to her bedroom. “Whoa…what’s the big emergency?” she asked as Rochelle slammed the door behind them.

“I think I’m in love with Tony,” Rochelle said as she paced up and down. Desiree giggled.

“Tell me something I don’t know,” she said as she sat on the edge of her sister’s bed.

“That is not good. I don’t want to be in love,” Rochelle said looking at Desiree. “That’s when everything bad happens. You get vulnerable, the man knows that you can’t live without him and then he tramples on your heart and all you can do is just watch as he destroys you,” she said as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Desiree looked at her and it suddenly hit her. Her sister was seriously freaking out about the whole love thing. And she was to blame. Her sister had grown up watching the train wreck that was her love life unfold right before her eyes. That was all she knew about love. The hurt, the pain, the despair and the fact that her foster parents fought all the time did not help. She stood up in front of Rochelle, held her face in her hands and looked into her eyes. She could see the fear.

“Hey, listen to me. Don’t freak out, okay?” Desiree said as he looked at her. “Yes, love can be complicated and even painful sometimes but you know what makes it worth it? The little things. The way he looks at you and you feel the love, the way he holds you when you cry, the comfort he gives you after you’ve had a fight. All that, that is what makes relationship worthwhile,” she said looking at Rochelle. She had never seen her so scared before. Not since Desiree got custody of her, freeing her from that hell that was her foster home. “Every man is not Leon or that asshole foster father of yours Charles. And I can tell Tony is a great guy,” Desiree said again. Rochelle nodded as Desiree wiped off the tears off her sister’s cheeks.

“I know he is,” Rochelle said.

“Then stop shutting him out because if you keep on doing it you may lose him and I would hate to see you hurt, little sister,” Desiree said. Rochelle nodded and smiled. “What?” Desiree asked looking at Rochelle.

“You just made it clear that you care about me. You big softie,” she said. Desiree smiled and pulled her close to hug her.

“Of course I do you big buffoon. Now, let’s get that face cleaned up. You look like shit,” Desiree said as she forced her to take a seat on the bed. “Now, let’s see,” she said under her breath as she walked over to Rochelle’s dressing table and picked up her sister’s makeup bag. “How do you even live with all these?” she asked as she walked back to the bed.

“It’s not that much. Quit making such a big deal of it,” Rochelle said.

“Roch, there are like five different brands of concealer in here,” Desiree said in surprise.

“Well, there is no such thing as too much makeup. Or shoes. Or handbags,” Rochelle said smiling as Desiree took some compact powder from the bag.

“Okay. Look up,” she said as she carefully applied the powder to conceal the tear marks. “How come your mascara doesn’t run?” she asked as she slowly swiped the cotton pad across her sister’s cheek.

“New brand. You should try it. It’s pretty popular with swimmers,” Rochelle said looking at Desiree.

Waterproof makeup?” Desiree asked as she put the bag back. Rochelle nodded. “You are very adventurous with product aren’t you?” she said as Rochelle stood up.

“So, how do I look?” Rochelle asked. Desiree smiled.

“Beautiful,” she said before they walked out of the bedroom together. They found Cynthia and Taylor in hysterics as Tony demonstrated what seemed to be him on a motorcycle.

“So there I am, right in the middle of the damn estate, horses all over but I am on a bike that I had no idea where it came from and the father of the bride looks at me and asks, ‘son, why are you riding my Harley naked?’ and I completely froze. I had no idea I was nude,” he said before bursting into laughter. Rochelle walked up to where he was and took a seat next to him as Desiree sat next to Taylor.

“What did I miss?” she asked in a whisper.

“Nothing, just Tony telling us his story about being a groomsman from hell,” Taylor said laughing. “Everything okay with Roch?” he asked in a whisper. Desiree nodded.

“She just needed a little sister talk. She’s fine now,” Desiree said smiling. Cynthia looked over at the two of them and cleared her throat loudly.

“Hey, Ericson and future missus, what’s with the whispers?” she asked. Taylor lifted his hands up in defense.

“Hey, I thought today was about getting to know more about Tony,” he said with a smile.

“Yeah, Cynthia. Don’t get your panties all up in a bunch,” Desiree said smiling. Cynthia shot her a dirty look. She hated being told that and Desiree knew it.

“Okay fine,” Cynthia said rolling her eyes. “So Tony, sweetie. I don’t want you to feel as if we are grilling you or anything but Rochelle has kept you well hidden for a while. We have no idea who the real you is. Let’s start with what you do,” she said as she snatched another beer from Rochelle. She moved the beers to Taylor and Desiree’s side and pushed the Kool-Aid pitcher towards Rochelle who sighed loudly as she poured herself a drink. Tony looked at her and frowned.

“I have known her for almost a year and I have never known her to drink this much. Is this like normal?” he asked looking at Cynthia and then at Desiree.

“It’s new for us too, don’t worry about it. So long as we keep her hydrated, she’ll be fine,” Cynthia said. “So, about you,” she pressed as she looked at him. Tony took a long deep breath and leaned back on the couch.

“I’m what they call a trust fund brat turned rogue,” he said smiling. Desiree raised an eyebrow.

“You lost me. Or is it just me? Cynthia? Ericson?” she asked as she looked at Cynthia and then at Taylor.

“Okay, uh…what happens is, you are born to rich parents and they have some money kept aside for you,” Tony began.

“Some money? How about a whole lot?” Rochelle said laughing. Cynthia looked at her and shrugged.

“How much are we talking here? Twenty thousand? Fifty?” she asked. Rochelle shook her head.

“Try eight million,” Rochelle said. Cynthia coughed loudly.

“What? Dollars?” she asked.

“No, Cynthia. Pigs. Of course dollars, dummy,” Rochelle said rolling her eyes.

“So anyway,” Tony went on, “the money is there on condition that you do exactly what your parents want you to do – including marry the girl they choose to secure their financial ties to rich families and what not. I said no and I was cut off, so I set up my own company and my father simply hates it that I did so well,” Tony said smiling. There was an obvious pride in his smile.

“Wow, that really happens?” Desiree asked. Tony nodded.

“Oh yeah. He actually tried to make sure my company doesn’t succeed by bad mouthing me to all the companies he could reach, so I tried a different strategy. I went for small and medium sized enterprises. That way I kept away from every string attached to my father and voila, here I am,” he said proudly.

“Hmm, cool. What is it that you do anyway?” Desiree asked.

“Security solutions for corporate and private property,” Tony said.

“Cool stuff,” Taylor said with a smile. I think self-employment is the only way to guarantee you smooth sail in this difficult market. You never know when you may be laid off due to budget cuts,” he added as he draped an arm around Desiree.

“Speaking of which, I really need to go guys. There is something I need to take care of back at the office,” Tony said as he stood up. He looked at Rochelle and smiled. “You want to come with? We can head back to my place and I’ll help you sleep that alcohol off, I promise,” he said. Rochelle looked at her sister and then at Cynthia.

“Go on. He is happier to pick up after you than any of us are anyway,” Cynthia said with a smile. Tony smiled as he helped Rochelle up.

“Whoa. How much did you have? I only noticed the four beers,” Tony said as he draped her arm around his neck and slipped his own arm around her waist to support her.

“You missed the gin and the tequila shots earlier on,” Desiree said smiling up at him. Tony looked at Rochelle and shook his head.

“Baby, why that much?” he asked.

“Oh she was nervous about us meeting you,” Taylor said smiling. “But don’t worry, I’m sure you have the girls’ approval,” he added with a smile. Cynthia stood up and walked over to Tony.

“Come on, I’ll help you get her to the car,” she said.

“Thank you so much. She is little but she sure is heavy, especially when drunk,” he said as they walked out.
